Why Lab-Grown Diamonds

Same stone, different origin. What that actually changes, and what it does not.

What a lab-grown diamond actually is

A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon, crystallized in the same cubic structure as a natural diamond. It carries the same hardness, the same refractive index, the same fire, and is graded on the same 4Cs, cut, color, clarity, and carat, by the same independent laboratories. The distinction is entirely one of origin. A natural diamond forms over geological time under the earth's own pressure. A lab-grown diamond forms over a matter of weeks, inside a reactor built to reproduce those same conditions.

Composition

Pure carbon, crystallized in the cubic lattice unique to diamond. Identical at the atomic level to a natural stone.

Hardness

10 on the Mohs scale. A lab-grown diamond scratches, cuts, and wears exactly like a natural one.

Grading

Graded on the same 4Cs by the same independent laboratories used for natural stones.

Detection

Indistinguishable by eye or a standard loupe. Origin is confirmed only by specialized lab equipment, and stated on the certificate.

How it is grown

Two methods are in use. CVD, chemical vapor deposition, builds the stone atom by atom from a carbon-rich gas at low pressure. HPHT, high pressure high temperature, reproduces the earth's conditions directly, inside a press. Both are disclosed on every certificate we issue, alongside the standard 4C grading, and neither is held to a different standard than the other.

What it is not

A lab-grown diamond is not the same thing as a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials entirely, chosen for their resemblance to diamond rather than their composition. A lab-grown diamond is not an approximation. It is diamond, grown rather than mined, and certified as such by the same laboratories that grade natural stones.

Where the price difference actually goes

A lab-grown diamond costs less per carat than a natural diamond of the same grade, and that gap widens as carat weight increases, since a natural stone's price accelerates with rarity rather than with the cost of producing it. What that difference means in practice is a shift in where your budget goes, not a discount on the same piece. The same spend that would sit in carat weight alone with a natural stone can instead go toward a larger center stone, a heavier gold setting, or a more articulated piece.

This matters more for a house built on Idea, Form, Material, Craft than for one built around the stone as the centerpiece. A lab-grown diamond is what makes it possible to resolve an ambitious design in real diamond, at a price where the idea does not have to be diluted to fit the stone.

The stone stopped being the constraint. That is the actual shift, not the origin story.

On natural diamonds

Natural diamonds remain available on bespoke commissions. Lab-grown is the default across the standard catalog because it is what the design language calls for at these price points, not because natural stones are lesser. Origin is a sourcing decision, not a value judgment, and the certificate states which one you are holding either way.
